Orange, gold, green belt, in light-weight knitting worsted, is about 2″ wide for slipping through belt loops of jeans; length is adjustable.

SIZE: Adjustable.

MATERIALS: For hip belt: Light-weight knitting worsted, 4-ply sport yarn, or wool and Shetland wool, 1 oz. each of orange (A), gold (B) and green (C). Steel crochet hook size 0. (Or English aluminum size 10.)

For waist belt: Unpolished jute, such as Lily Mills Jute-Tone, (1) 4-oz. spool each of rose (A), pink (B) and red (C). Aluminum crochet hook size I (Or English size 5.)

GAUGE: Each small square = 1-3/4″; each large square = 3-1/2″.

Notes: Directions are the same for both belts. Hook size and yarn determine size of square. Squares are worked tightly to minimize stretching. When changing colors, work over all short ends of yarn to hide them. Work over short ends when crocheting edging.

SQUARE: With A, ch 3, join with sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), make 2 dc in ring, ch 3, * 3 dc in ring, ch 3, repeat from * twice, join with sl st to top of ch 3. End off A.
Rnd 2: Join B in a ch-3 sp, ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), 2 hdc in same sp, hdc in 2nd dc of 3-dc cluster, * (3 hdc, ch 1, 3 hdc) in comer ch-3 sp, hdc in 2nd dc of 3-dc cluster, repeat from * twice, 3 hdc, ch 1 in same sp as first 3 hdc, join with sl st to top of ch 2. End off B.
Rnd 3: Join C in a ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp as joining, * sc in each of 7 hdc, work sc, ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp at corner, repeat from * 3 times, end last repeat sc in same sp as joining. Join with sl st to ch 1. End off C.

Work 2nd motif in same way, do not end off C. Holding squares with wrong sides facing, sl st squares together through back loops. Continue in this way, joining as many motifs as necessary for belt length desired.

Edging: For hip belt: Attach C in 2nd sc on long edge. Work 1 sc in each sc and 1 hdc in st at joinings if necessary to keep edging even. At first corner, * make a ch 11″ long, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (insert hook in top 2 threads of ch) *, (sc in each of 5 sc on square, work from * to *) twice, sc across other long edge as before, work 3 ties as before, join with sl st to first sc on edging.

For waist belt: Attach C in 2nd sc on long edge. Work same as for other belt to first corner, ch 2; on short edge, work 1 sc in each of 2 sc, ch 2, skip 1 sc, work 1 sc in each of 3 sc, ch 2, skip 1 sc, work 1 sc in each of 2 sc, ch 2, work sc across long edge as before, work 4 loops on short edge as before. Join with sl st to first sc on edging.

Lacing: Using 1 strand of each color, make a twisted cord desired length. (see below). Lace through front as shown.

MATERIALS:
For an afghan 49″ wide by 56″ long
14 , 3-oz skeins of Color A and Color B
For smaller afghan,
4 1/2 (1.75-oz) skeins of Color A and Color B
Use Size J hook

ORIGINAL DIRECTIONS: To read altered instruction, see pattern below

Chain loosely to size, using color A.

Finish off last ch with color B, leaving a tail about 6″ long; turn.

In 2nd ch, sc across. Finish off with color A, (leaving 6″ tail again); turn.

*Starting in first st of color B, pick up top of sc plus top of sc of previous row and sc across to end.
In last st, do half a sc (by pulling loop of color B through both stitches), then finish off st with color A, leaving 6″ tail; turn. Cut off end of previous color, leaving tail. Starting in first st of color A, pick up top of sc plus top of sc of previous row and sc across to end.*

Repeat between * for desired length. On last row, finish by picking up both stitches in top row, plus top of previous row’s stitches. You will sc through 3 stitches.

Fasten off. If you wish, tie the “tails” in groups of 3-5, making a finished fringe look.

ALTERED INSTRUCTIONS

Awhile back I sort of rewrote Sharon’s pattern, clarifying everything I didn’t understand when I tried doing it that first time and had to ask you half a dozen questions. I hope it’s okay to post my “revised” version. This should help those who were a little unclear on the pattern. In addition to expanding the instructions, I added a little “summary” in brackets to explain the color needed for each row.

Here it is:
The following was sent to me by Sharon Devol and edited slightly by me for clarity. The resulting afghan will be one color on one side, and a different one on the other. You can also vary it by using a solid color for one side, and a variegated yarn or many different colors on the other. NOTE: From the sample swatch I did, I have one bit of advice: don’t use a very dark color along with a very light color, such as dark green or blue with white or off-white. The darker side will look fine, but you will be able to see the darker color “bleeding through” the light side. Two dark colors or two light ones should be fine. -TMM

“Color A” represents the color on one side of the afghan, “Color B” the other side.

When the pattern says to “finish off last sc with color A [or B]“, here’s what you do: start a sc in the normal way by inserting the hook through the two loops specified, YO, and drawing up a loop, but don’t complete the stitch by YO and pulling through the 2 loops on the hook. Instead, do a YO using the other color and pull *that* through the 2 loops on the hook. Continue the next row with the new color, cutting off all but 6″ of the old one.

When you are done, the 6-inch “tails” that result when you cut off and join new colors can be knotted together to form a fringe, so that you don’t have to weave in or work over all those loose ends.

BI-SIDED AFGHAN
(A size “J” hook with 150 chains and 14 3-oz. skeins of each color makes an afghan 49″ wide by 56″ long. Or, @ 135 chains, a 1.75 oz skein = 4-1/2″ of each color.)

Chain loosely to size, using color A.

Finish off last ch with color B, leaving a tail about 6″ long; turn. Cut color A, leaving a 6″ tail. [Ch is done with color A, last st is completed with color B.]

Row 1: Starting in back loop of 2nd ch, sc in back loop of each ch. Finish off with color A (leaving 6″ tail of each color again); turn. [Row 1 is done with color B, last st completed with color A.]

Row 2: Starting in first st of color B, insert hook in back loop of sc AND front loop of beginning ch; YO and draw up a loop and complete sc in the usual way. Sc across to end, inserting hook in back loop of previous row’s sc and front loop of beginning ch. Finish off with color B, leaving a 6″ tail of each color. [Row 2 is done with color A, last st completed with color B.]

Row 3: Starting in first st of color A, insert hook in back loop of sc plus front loop of sc of previous row and sc across to end as in row 2. In last st, do half a sc (by pulling loop of color B through both stitches), then finish off st with color A, leaving 6″ tail; turn. Cut off end of previous color, leaving tail. [Row 3 is done with color B, last st completed with color A.]

Row 4: Starting in first st of color B, insert hook in back loop of sc plus front loop of sc of previous row and sc across to end. In last st, do half a sc (by pulling loop of color A through both stitches), then finish off st with color B, leaving 6″ tail; turn. Cut off end of previous color, leaving tail. [Row 4 is done with color A, last st completed with color B.]

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 to desired length.

On last row, finish by pulling yarn through both loops in top row, plus front loop of previous row’s stitches. You will sc through 3 loops.

One thing you have to be careful of is how you finish the rows, that you end up with the same number of stitches across. It’s easy to slight some of the rows; make sure you start in the first previous-color’s stitch.
